Zweites Deutsches Fernsehen (ZDF), La Segunda Televisión Alemana, fue establecida en 1961 en base a un acuerdo entre todos los estados alemanes (ZDF-Staatsvertrag) y está estructurada como una única corporación (a diferencia de la ARD). Su sede central está en Mainz y cuenta con corresponsalias en todas las capitales de los Länder y un gran centro de producción en Berlín. Además de participar en DeutschlandRadio, la actividad principal de la ZDF es su canal de televisión nacional (incluyendo el servicio de teletexto ZDFtext) que comenzó a emitir en 1963. ZDF también opera un teletexto digital (ZDFdigitext) y tres canales temáticos: ZDFtheaterkanal, ZDFinfokanal and ZDFdokukanal.

ZDF conjuntamente con otros radiodifusores opera los siguientes canales especializados: el canal infantil Ki.Ka junto a la ARD (1997), el canal de reportajes y documentales PHOENIX junto a la ARD (1997), la cadena cultural Europea ARTE en cooperación con ARD y ARTE Francia (1992), la cadena cultural en lengua alemana 3sat en cooperación con la ARD, ORF y SRG (1984), el canal Estadounidense GERMAN TV (un proyecto de la ZDF, ARD y Deutsche Welle) y la plataforma digital ZDFvision.

ZDF se financia a través de un canon por tenencia de aparatos de televisión y radio y a través de publicidad (ARD y ZDF solo pueden emitir un máximo de 20 minutos de publicidad al dia de Lunes a Sábado y hasta las 20:00). La ZDF emplea 3,600 trabajadores y un número similar de freelancers y cuenta con 19 corresponsalías internacionales.

Zweites Deutsches Fernsehen (ZDF), The Second German Television, is based on an agreement among all Germany´s states (ZDF-Staatsvertrag) and  it´s structured as a single corporation. It was founded in 1961 and it´s located in Mainz with a network of bureaus in all of the Länder capitals and a major editorial and production bureau in Berlin. Aside from its participation in DeutschlandRadio, ZDF core operation is its nationwide television channel (including its teletext service ZDFtext) which went on air in 1963. ZDF also runs a digital teletext (ZDFdigitext) and three theme channels: ZDFtheaterkanal, ZDFinfokanal and ZDFdokukanal.

ZDF together with different partners runs several specialist channels: the children’s channel Ki.Ka in partnership with ARD (1997), the current affairs and documentary channel PHOENIX in partnership with ARD (1997), the European cultural channel ARTE in cooperation with ARD and ARTE France (1992), the satellite cultural channel 3sat in cooperation with ARD and the Austrian and Swiss public channels ORF and SRG (1984), the United States´s channel GERMAN TV (a joint project of ZDF, ARD and Deutsche Welle) and the digital multichannel bouquet ZDFvision.

ZDF is financed largely through monthly fees charged to television and radio owners and through commercials (advertising time for ZDF and ARD is legally restricted to a maximum of twenty minutes per day from Monday to Saturday before 20:00). It employs 3,600 employees plus a similar number of freelancers and has 19 foreign bureaus.
